Articles published on Datafloq need to have a minimum AI score of 60% and we provide this graph to give more detailed information on how we rate this article. Please note that this is a work in progress and if you have any suggestions, feel free to contact us.

The Internet of things (IoT) can be defined as the network of home appliances, vehicles, physical devices and other things entrenched with network connectivity, actuators, sensors, software and electronics which permit these objects to exchange and connect data. Each and every item is exclusively recognisable via its embedded computing system. However, it can inter-operate inside the current Internet infrastructure.

Experts have projected that the IoT will comprise of nearly 30 billion items by 2020. In addition to this, it has also been forecasted that the worldwide market value of IoT will upsurge to $7.1 trillion by 2020. These figures make it compulsory for all entrepreneurs to keep an eye on these latest IoT trends to incorporate them into their business practices.

Keeping this scenario mind, we are presenting you the list of top 7 IoT trends for 2018.

1. The IoT Will Expand

The most understood and clear forecast of the decade is that the IoT will keep on growing in 2018, with additional devices and gadgets coming online every single day. However, it is also significant to identify the areas where IoT growth will occur.

Three areas comprising of IoT in the supply chain, IoT in healthcare, and IoT in retail industries will probably experience the biggest expansion. According to Forrester, this will play the role of the backbone of customer value with its constant expansion. It is not surprising that retail is jumping abroad, expecting to connect the power of the IoT to link with consumers, enhance the customer journey in deeply personal methods, and grow their brands.

However, industries like supply and healthcare are not far behind. They are utilising the technology to connect with patients through wearable gadgets and monitor product from factory to floor. The complete potential of IoT is still being recognised in many different ways. We will probably see more of that in 2018.

2. It Will Also Become More Disjointed

With the consistent growth, IoT is expected to become more fragmented than before. We have already witnessed that the growth of as-a-service (aaS) cloud solutions and programs, that fragmentation will produce some obstacles for many companies because they deal with compatibility problems in their industries. Even though companies like Qualcomm are leading the push for IoT certifications device standards, in many ways, the genie has already left the lamp.

3. There Will Be Greater Security Concerns

This is the most important point, yet always sidelined that fragmentation leads to system compromise. It must be kept in mind that the network security challenges have a direct relation to system complexity. There are more network security challenges with the more complex system.

Certainly, safeguarding all these connected gadgets in an environment with nominal instruction will be problematic. Discovering a solution to keep information safe will be a key objective in the coming year.

4. Mobile Platforms Will Make More Sense

The fashion shift from mobile-first to mobile-only will probably continue to expand, as mobile platforms will become the effective management system for IoT gadgets. This is not surprising, but this has not ended also. The coming period will continue to look many conversions into mobile platform development.

5. There Will Be Constant Marketing Efforts

This may be a little too understandable. However, this coming period will be ripe with whistles, bells, and dings. This is because, customers are alerted to incentives, bargains and other news related to their offices and homes. A large number of companies will start to utilise IoT for personalised marketing efforts. They may also come to know that how much is too much when it comes to marketing.

6. Companies Will be Pushed to the Edge with Data

Organizations are required to look for an enhanced, cheaper, closer technique to process information. This is because of the huge arrival of data being generated via IoT. This is the reason why edge networking will be less of a trend and more of a need, as companies look to reduce network usage and cut costs.

Today we are witnessing companies like Dell, HPE, and Cisco leading the relocation of the computer infrastructure to the edge. Legacy industrial IoT companies such as ABB and GE are also creating the hardened infrastructure to control stimulating environments that are less ideal for hosting computer than traditional data centres.

7. Require Machines and Advanced Analytics to Help Manage It

This flooded data will push companies to the edge towards machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Certainly, AI will also become an obligation, as the quantity of data produced by the IoT will simply be too huge for humans to manage.

These very advanced technologies will be required to look for techniques to upkeep the rapidly expanding IoT space. On the contrary, in the meantime, we will witness a strong growth in analytics tools and software to give actual data streaming for IoT devices. Analytics companies like Teradata, SAP, SAS, and Software Advice are some of the players making noise in this field.

A series of new entrants in AI space, machine learning and IoT analytics is expected. This is because this data flood is going to need sophisticated tools to extract and manage the most valued insights.
