Stellar is an open source protocol for value exchange. It was founded in early 2014 by Jed Mccaleb and Joyce Kim. At launch, Stellar was based on the Ripple payment protocol, but after systemic problems with Ripple protocol’s consensus algorithm were discovered, a updated version of the protocol with a new consensus algorithm will be launched in early 2015.
