More and more businesses worldwide are now taking a keen interest in cloud computing and cloud-driven technologies. The reason? Because, so far, the consensus is that this novel technology has plenty to offer to companies in the current cut-throat market. While that may be reason enough for some to take the dive and embrace the technology, the wise would take their time. Yep, the smarter thing to do here is first to take the time to understand what cloud computing has to offer carefully. And if it suits your business’s unique requirements, etc., before deciding to migrate to the cloud.
Here is a quick list of cloud computing and migration’s pros and cons to help you do just that.

Pros:

1. Scalability: Easily among the most significant benefits is the ability to scale operations and quickly at that. This is mighty useful when faced with rapidly growing traffic, allowing the company to fulfill the growing demand in the market effortlessly.
2. Cut down infrastructure overhead: Cloud computing means you no longer have to invest in and set up the infrastructure to maintain your systems. This is because the infrastructure requirements are the service provider’s responsibility, including maintenance, repair, and updates.
3. Storage requirements: An on-premise setup can prove to be a massive impediment to growing storage requirements. With cloud computing, however, you can add storage space as and when the need arises.
4. Usage-based payment model: With cloud migration, you can switch to the pay-as-you-go model, i.e., pay solely based on your usage.

Cons:

1. Compliance issues: If the business deals with sensitive data, compliance with regulatory requirements can be cumbersome if not outright impossible.
2. Proprietary technologies: If the business uses some proprietary systems and technologies, it may struggle with compatibility issues with cloud apps.
3. Lack of transparency: Since the service provider controls the hardware, there are bound to be transparency issues. This is especially true when the company undertakes debugging activities to address the problems with their systems.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the risks as well.
a. Incompatibility: One of the biggest issues one may face while migrating to the cloud is incompatibility. This is especially true for businesses that involve intricate IT architecture and setup. To deal with this, experts recommend using Kubernetes, Azure, Docker engine, etc.
b. Risk of data loss: There is no denying that the move to the cloud is a complex endeavor, one that is prone to myriad risks. One that companies often experience much trepidation about is the loss of data, be it due to corrupt, incomplete, or missing files. This problem, thankfully, can be efficiently dealt with by creating data backup.
c. Latency: When the business attempts to access its databases, services, apps, etc., it may experience unnecessary latency now and then. While it may not be an issue for some, it may be critical to delivering unfettered service, especially where high-quality customer service is non-negotiable.
Moving to the cloud may seem like an intimidating endeavor at first and rightly so. This is why before you hire a vendor for cloud application development services, it is imperative to carefully evaluate your business’s unique requirements, especially about the cloud. So, be sure to give the benefits, disadvantages, and risks careful thought before making a final decision.
