In May 2017, WannaCry affected organizations across the globe, including numerous hospitals. It led to work shut down at hospitals across the United Kingdom and affected hospitals in Canada and United States. According to a report by an investment banking advisory firm Alpen Capital, the GCC healthcare market is projected to grow at a CGR compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.1% per annum from an estimated $40.3 billion in 2015 to $71.3 billion in 2020. With this growth comes the risk of cyber-attacks which can vary from financial fraud, medical insurance fraud, attacks on computer-controlled medical devices to patient information.’

Why UAE?’
- In late May 2017, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, on Wednesday launched the Dubai Cyber Security Strategy that aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a world leader in innovation, safety and security.
- The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has launched an information security project, which comes in line with the Dubai Cyber Security Strategy. DHA has adopted a training programme for the Information Security project. So far, 5,000 staff members have been trained and by the end of the year 10,000 staff members will be trained in data achieving and information protection and security protocols.
- An advanced cyber security network was rolled out across 35 federal bodies on Saturday with the aim to protect the UAE government against ‘advanced persistent threats’. Called the Federal Network, or FEDNet for short, the sweeping upgrade was launched by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
