Which Top IoT Companies Lost, Kept and Won its Charm in 2018?

In my article Which Top IoT companies are losing, keeping or winning its Charm in 2017? , I reviewed Top IoT 10 companies that in 2017 in my opinion lost, maintained or gained charm in the sector of the Internet of Things (IoT).

With more than 5.000 views, more than 200 Likes and more than 70 shares, I can say that the acceptance of this article was good and therefore I have decided to update the list in 2018.

Defining Charm

The power of pleasing or attracting through their strategy, investments, innovation, teams, products, events and media presence. Their attractiveness is well received by investors, customers, developers and analysts.

Which ones lost its Charm in 2018?

The 5 Top companies that have lost its IoT charm in 2018 are:

  1. Cisco “  According to a Cisco study in 2017, only 26% of companies surveyed say they have achieved success with their IoT initiatives. And maybe executives at Cisco considered that it was time to back to the basic.  Cisco was taking its intent-based networking concept, which it first revealed in June 2017, and extended it to the Internet of Things (IoT). In the IoT area specifically, Cisco is using intent-based networking to rework IoT networks. Cisco is working on three areas in IoT: Identity Service Engine (ISE) software that will help enterprises recognize devices when those devices connect to the network, Software-defined access (SD-Access) and its cloud-based service called Operational Insights into the IoT realm so that companies can use location analytics to track assets and IoT devices in addition to collecting data. In 2018 some executive of Cisco Jasper left the company and no clues of other considered strategic acquisitions to lead the famous Internet of Everything(IoE). Maybe a cohesive IoT Strategy began to take shape at Cisco last year, but I did not see expected results of its Cisco Kinetic platform, so I consider the company has not merited for a win or keep its charm.
  2. GE Digital “  In 2018, GE Digital´s leadership in Industrial IoT has remained in question. The parent company GE is expected to spin off the division into a standalone firm and is selling a majority stake in ServiceMax, considered strategic acquisition only two years ago. All turbulences around GE has affected negatively to the sales of Predix IoT Platform GE Digital during 2018. No doubt that GE Digital lose its charm in 2018.
  3. IBM “  In spite that IBM Watson Internet of Things was named a leader in IDC MarketScape for 2017 Worldwide IoT Platforms, the results of IoT investment in 2016 did not give the expected results.  IBM continue losing relevance in 2018 against other Cloud IoT vendors. IBM is pushing to be the driving force in the IoT and become again one of the most recognisable names in the IoT technology industry. I am confident that after IBM acquired Red Hat, the company can recover its charm in 2019. Great expectations for next year but in 2018 lose its charm.
  4. Dell Technologies    “ Dell Technologies’ Edge and IoT Solutions Division announcements in 2018 have particular resonance for the channel. But maybe because the company is launching in phases specific IoT solutions with the appropriate reseller partners, I did not see the scale I expected. Dell could not repeat the momentum of 2017. Lose its charm in 2018.
  5. SAP Leonardo “ After investing $2.2 billion in IoT and Partner Opportunities, rolled out new applications and services around the Internet of Things (IoT)  and making efforts to reduce the complexity of developing and deploy IoT solutions I did not see increase market share and win new customers. This year SAP Leonardo could not keep its charm in 2018.

Which ones kept its Charm?

The 3 Top companies that have to keep its IoT charm in 2018 are:

  1. PTC “ Since Rockwell and PTC announced their partnership earlier 2018 at Rockwell Automation TechED ”including a $1 billion equity investment from Rockwell into PTC ”the two companies have been hard at work to bring their respective offerings into alignment. And before the end of the year, they released their first collaborative offering: FactoryTalk InnovationSuite, which provides improved data insights through a single source of operations visibility and systems status.  PTC also partners with Microsoft to help customers accelerate their Digital Transformations in IoT.  The company announced in fall 2018 that is preparing in 2009 an18 Million USD restructuring plan. We probably see the impact in 2019, but PTC deserves to keep the charm in 2018.
  2. Intel “IoTSWC 2018 award Intel-ARM-Pelion for its innovative solution jointly developed by Intel, ARM and Pelion enabling users to connect any IoT device to the cloud in a matter of seconds. Reducing the complexity of IoT development, Intel revamps in 2018 its IoT roadmap to benefit developers and integrators. Other news along 2108 that makes Intel keep its charm were: Intel Capital pumps $72M into AI, IoT, cloud and silicon startups, $115M invested so far in 2018.  Dell Technologies is combining tools from its broad portfolio with technology from Intel and partners in the Dell Technologies IoT Solutions Partner Program.
  3. Did you know Intel processes more than a 5 billion data points a day in its factories?.  The chipmaker laid out a white paper talking about how it deals with data. Yes, it’s selling Intel products, but as a manufacturer that makes billions of chips a year, it’s also practising what it preaches and can offer useful insights to others. Intel deserves to keep its charm in 2018.

Which ones won its Charm?

The 3 Top companies that have won its IoT charm in 2018 are:

  1. Microsoft “ Microsoft is now the world’s most valuable company. The company made a major statement earlier in 2018 when it announced a 5 billion USD commitment to the Internet of Things projects for the next four years. That new investment has already resulted in new products, such as Azure Sphere and Azure Digital Twins. The company also launches its IoT deployment and management platform Axure IoT Central to the general public. New customers, new partners and good recommendation of analyst make the Redmond, Wash-based company won the charm I 2018.
  2. ARM “ The list of ARM’s acquisitions in 2018, includes enterprise data management leader,  Treasure Data, enabling device-to-data IoT platform, Stream Technologies to expands IoT Connectivity and Device Management Capabilities and ChaoLogix. These acquisitions and the new Pelion IoT Platform will give ARM businesses superpowers. For a second consecutive year, ARM is in the Top winners IoT charm list.
  3. Google “  Google I/O 2018 marks a new era for IoT devices with new Google Assistant capabilities. In 2018 Google buys Xively to improve its IoT platform. The company invest in creating a strong ecosystem adding new IoT partners.  Finally Google forays into edge computing with cloud IoT Edge and TPU. Good reasons to include Google in this winner list.

Only Google, of the list of potential candidates that I followed last year, has won its charm last year. The other top companies that I followed: Salesforce, Oracle, Hitachi Vantara, Sierra Wireless, Huawei,  Bosch, Sigfox, HPE do not deserve to be in this top list yet.

This year, besides the Telcos IoT Service Providers and the IoT startups,  I will also follow the following IoT top vendors companies: C3IoT, SAS, Uptake, FogHorn; Siemens Mindsphere.

Which ones will be competing for Winning its Charm in 2019?

As we continue making IoT Predictions in 2019, I will continue analysing which top companies will be in the IoT Charm list in 2019.
