We are recruiting for an assistant technician to join the Underwater Acoustics area to support delivery of measurement work at NPL facilities in Teddington and at Wraysbury Reservoir. An ideal candidate will a track record of working in a commercial calibration laboratory or a test house, and valid first aid and boat driving licence, with a track record of regular usage. However, this is not essential as boat handling and first aid training will be provided.
You will be directed by others to deliver technical activities using NPL knowledge and solutions for acoustic measurement and calibration utilising NPL's specialised laboratory facilities and equipment. The successful candidates will play key roles in delivering NPL's scientific work, including the delivery of measurement services and contributing to research and development projects, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail. Travel for work beyond NPL sites may be required, for example to attend events or support trials project work at sea or similar. Main requirements of the role include:
- Adhere to all Health safety and Security rules
- Arrive prompt and complete assigned daily jobs within specific timescales – these jobs are a wide variety, and take place at two locations, Teddington site and Wrasbury Reservoir, so you must be able to travel to these locations easily. An essential requirement of the role is flexibility to attend either site.
- Support for provisioning and delivering acoustic measurements
- Delivery of work and representation of the Group and NPL
- Washdown and maintenance of facilities and NPL's own as well as customer equipment – these jobs are a wide variety.
An aptitude for precise experimental work is essential for the role, along with a good understanding of the underlying physical principles. The successful candidates will have good communication skills, both verbal and written. And demonstrable ability to openly communicate concerns and issues early on and to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions. In addition, it would be beneficial to have some knowledge of hardware operation, and data analysis techniques, as well as experience of software packages such as Matlab and/or LabView.
