We have written before about the massive possibilities big data has for the agricultural industry. Companies like John Deere have added many sensors in their machines to analyse the vast amounts of data that is being created during farming. Now there is a big data startup that focuses solely on the farming industry. MysmartFarm is a South-African big data startup for farmers to work with their live data.
MysmartFarm will be a cloud platform that combines several high-tech agricultural big data solutions for the farmer. It will provide the farmer with a visual dashboard with all the relevant information, big data analytics to gain more insights and it will empower the farmer with eco-intelligent, scientific, real-time advice that saves time and money. It is a one-stop big data solution that is also accessible via tablet or smartphone.
In fact, MysmartFarm will mine the agricultural data and empower the farmer by pushing real-time messages to the farmer while working on the land so that the farmer has a complete overview of his/her farm. MysmartFarm was founded by Wolfgang Johann von Loeper in 2012, who previous to founding MysmartFarm was a farmer himself. After being frustrated with using a various amount of tools such as weather prediction models or geospatial analytics he started working on his own tool.
They have two patents pending and with their first version MVP they have 11 customers and focus on fruit and grape farmers in the Western Cape of South Africa. They have won two awards; among others they were winner of the 2013 IBM SmartCamp Africa. They were also awarded a $ 1,7 million grant from the South African government to develop MysmartFarm.
According to a video by MysmartFarm only 1% of farmers use precision software and although this is difficult to check, fact is that the agricultural industry will face massive changes in the coming years. So, if MysmartFarm knows to pull this off and create a big data startup for this industry it has a bright future ahead of them. Therefore we give them a 6 bits rating.
