In a world where massive amounts of data are being created in real-time and where that data is used to make important decisions within organisations, good data governance has become essential for companies. If you have rubbish data coming into your organisations, the information derived from it will also be rubbish. Or if your algorithms that you use are incorrect, you will also get incorrect information from that data. As an organisation you should constantly check what’s going on and make sure that the data and analytics are trustworthy. Especially because still a lot of managers do not yet trust data and rather base their decisions on their gut feeling and years of experience. In this video, Andrew Cameron from Capgemini explains what they do to ensure good data governance.
On of the important aspects is having the right skill set and the right big data talent in your organisation who know how to deal with the data and are capable of creating correct algorithms and models. Another important aspect is to ensure the protection of the data and that the sensitive data is not getting out of your organisations unintentionally. In order to achieve that is it important to have an understanding of the source of data and knowing where and how the information derived from that will eventually be used. Organising and managing modeling processes and ensuring that they are regularly tested should be part of this.
So, the vast amounts of data of today, the complex processes and models that are built to deal with that data and the many people having access to that data creates that good governance and control has changed fundamentally and will become a lot more essential in the coming years.
