Sqrrl is a Boston-based Big Data startup that has built an enterprise solution on top of Apache Accumulo. Accumulo was developed by the NSA to deal with massive scale structured and unstructured data sets. Apache Accumulo is a NoSQL database that is flexible, secure and can scale to up to multiple petabytes. Accumulo is used throughout the Department of Defense and the U.S. Intelligence Service.

Sqrrl was founded in August 2012 when a team of the core creators and developers of Accumulo teamed up to develop an enterprise solution. With a $ 2 million seed funding from Matrix Partners & Atlas Venture they started to develop a NoSQL platform for powering real-time web applications on top of Big Data.

Sqrrl Enterprise has extended the Accumulo capabilities with additional security, data ingest, real-time analytical features and dashboards that provide insights for organisations. Sqrrl Enterprise offers a combination of petabyte scalability for multi-structured data, cell-level security controls, native Hadoop integration, and diverse analytic capabilities, including full-text search, aggregations, and graph analysis. All together a powerful combination for organisations that require deep insights.

Sqrrl focuses on a wide range of different industries including Cyber Security, Energy, Finance, Government, Healthcare and Telecommunications. Up till now that have over a dozen of customers and are growing at a steady rate. They have received numerous awards, including being named one of 10 Emerging Tech Companies to watch.

Sqrrl managed to turn a powerful data storage technology developed by the NSA into an Enterprise edition that offers companies a lot of advantages. Their pricing is based on a per node annual subscription, enabling companies scale as required. Sqrrl provides a solution for companies that want to bring together complex data sets with high security measures, therefore we give them a 7 bit rating.
