How Big Social Data Can Help Law Enforcement Video

Big data can provide law enforcement with the capabilities to look at the future by combining different sources of information. Big data can help to identify the emergence of the crime and future patterns of crimes. Babak Akhgar, Professor of Informatics, Director of CENTRIC, discusses a 6-tier model of how law enforcement should utilize big data:

  1. An assessment should be made, why do you need big data;
  2. It should be knowledge-driven, otherwise dont bother going after data;
  3. It should be holistic and scalable, taking into account architectural issues;
  4. It should be goal-driven, what do you want to achieve;
  5. It should be analytical, providing past, present and future insights;
  6. It should be result-oriented, what will be the return?

Combine traditional data sources and new, social, media data sources can provide true insights and as Babak Akhgar explains create a knowledge matrix. Social media can provide valuable insights for the law enforcement regarding identifying and predicting future crimes.
