Splice Machine is a big data startup that takes a different approach, as they are the have created an SQL-on-Hadoop database offering a real-time solution for big data applications. It is a combination of the advantages of NoSQL databases, like auto-sharding, fault tolerance, high availability and scalability, while maintaining the SQL standard. The product that Splice Machine has developed can harness real-time data in operational and analytics workloads and takes Hadoop beyond batch processing.
The database is optimized for complex queries and is built on technologies such as Apache Derby, a Java-Based, ANSI SQL Database, and HBase/Hadoop, a proven distributed computing infrastructure. They have identified five areas where Splice Machine can make a difference. These are consumer marketing, personalized healthcare, system telemetry, real-time operations and real-time analytics.
Splice Machine closed a $ 15 million Series B round in February 2014 and it will use the additional funding to increase their sales and marketing efforts as well as scale up and move from private beta into public beta. Splice Machines is currently being tests by a small group of customers as a replacement for their MySQL, Oracle or PostgreSQL databases. In addition, the funding will be used to create additional awareness and increase their sales team. Pricing is on a per-node-basis and the database can be delivered on premises or in the (private) cloud.
Splice Machines was founded in 2012 by Monte Zweben, currently CEO and a seasoned serial entrepreneur, John Leach, CTO, and Eugene Davis, Vice President of Products and Operations. In total they have raised $ 19 million in funding from among others Mohr Davidow Ventures and InterWest Partners. They have received quite some recognition, among others they were named one of 2013’s Top 10 Coolest Big Data Products by CRN Magazine.
Real-time analytics is a very important aspect of a Big Data Strategy and with Splice Machine this becomes possible on Hadoop. Combining the benefits of NoSQL with traditional SQL BI tools and well-know visualization tools like Tableau is a powerful strategy. Splice Machine enables applications that can take advantage of many different types of data, in real-time, and therefore we give them a 7 bits rating.
