JethroData is an analytic database technology that runs on Hadoop and provides automatic indexing of data that is written into Hadoop. JethroData can be added to any standard Hadoop distribution and it allows also the nontechnical users to explore the data interactively and find answers using standard SQL or BI tools.
The combination of the storage capacity and scalability of Hadoop with a fully indexed, columnar analytic database results in high query performance at high speeds and a reduction of computing resources. JethroData is capable of supporting millions of events per minute and can perform Terabyte queries by hundreds of concurrent users.
Originally founded in Israel, JethroData now also has an office in New York. In September 2012 it was founded by Boaz Raufman, CTO and a former R&D manager, Eli Singer, CEO and with 20 years of experience leading hi-tech companies and Ronen Ovadya, a former Director at Amdocs. In February of 2013 they secured a $ 4.5 million Series A investment from Pitango VC.
They aim to simplify and enhance the complex process of storing data in and extracting data out of Hadoop. They do however face a tough challenge, as there are many different competitors on the market who do something similar. There is Cloudera with Impala, Hortonworks with Tez and Hadapt among others. Currently JethroData is in controlled beta release with several customers and 15 employees. The investment received will, among others, be used to grow to 25 employees by the end of 2013.
JethroData is focusing mainly on the Internet, Advertising, E-Commerce, Financial, Telco, Education, Government, Retail and Manufacturing industry. They have patents pending, which could help distinguish them in the highly competitive market of companies that are trying to solve the main problem of Hadoop real-time extracting of data from Hadoop. But as this market is still emerging and likely to grow fast in the coming years, we give them a 6 bits rating.
