Emcien Corporation has developed several products to help organisations understand their raw datasets (structured and unstructured) and derive insights from it to improve decision-making. It uses pattern discovery to deliver valuable insights. Insights related to buying patterns of customers can as such improve and align the manufacturing operations. The patented pattern-algorithms of Emcien Corporation crunch the raw data, recognize important data, skips irrelevant data, evaluate the possibilities and visualize the patterns that exist within the data.

Emciens software helps organisations optimize product offering, model and test new product configurations, track trends to reduce lead-times and improve inventory forecasting and it gives users insights into their sales data. It is a complete overview of all relevant information to deliver the best product for customers at the right time at minimum operational costs. Results can be automatically delivered via a user interface or API.

The software can also detect patterns in what people are buying in order to stimulate cross-selling and product-bundling. It can optimize the inventory, as the algorithm removes the low-volume, slow moving items that are difficult to combine to other products. It can also recommend other products automatically in case a product is sold-out. Instead of telling the system manually which product should replace a sold-out product, the algorithm detects the right product based on historical sales patterns, linkages and commonalities. This can save a lot of time in product and website configuration.

Emcien helps organisations to optimize inventory based on what is bought. Based on real-time data prediction are made for future sales. However, this does not say a lot about future needs and wishes of customers. So, proper research will be necessary when developing a new product. If organisations only focus on the information from Emciens algorithms, they might miss out on the next big thing or become less innovative as they only focus what is already bought instead of what might be bought. A too strong focus on Emciens insights could therefore cause organisations to miss out.

The Emcien Corporation technology runs on the Amazon Elastic Cloud (EC2), allowing them to handle different client sizes. Since their launch in 2002 they have had some big clients among others Porsche, Dell or John Deere. Their product is mostly suitable for product organisations such as retailers or manufactures, though Emcien is seeing success in other sectors that are more time-critical such as Intel, telecom, banking or insurance.

Dr. Roy Marsten, now Chief Scientist, and Radhika Subramanian, the CEO, founded Emcien Corporation in the search for answers to critical but common business problems such as the optimal product mix offering. Using a big data solution like pattern-detection and to analyse all sorts of raw data to find that optimal mix is an innovative solution that separates Emcien Corporation from other existing business intelligence companies.

They are backed by Imlay Investments and received a NSF grant, but the amount is unknown. At the moment they are focusing on expansion, had approximately $ 6 million in revenue in 2012 and aim to double this in 2013. In 2012, NCR named them SaaS supplier of the year. Emcien Corporation is a very interesting player in the field of business intelligence and lean manufacturing and one to watch in the coming years. We therefore give them a 7 bits rating.
