Datoscala is a new company that was recently launched out of Lebanon and with that they are one of the few big data startups out of the MENA region. They were launched in 2012 and are located in Beirut and Dubai. Their mission is to make use of data to create clear and dynamic insights out of it. Primarily they are a data science and consultancy firm that help organisations transform into data driven organisations. The big data tool that they have developed is called Data Voodoo Labs.
Data Voodoo Labs is a big data analytics research lab that provides big data engineering capacity for organisations that want to exploit data. The big data engineers of Datoscala use machine-learning to deliver insights on diverse topics and behaviours. They have developed visualization tools that help to find data-mashup findings. It is interesting to note that they combine data supplied by organisations with external public data to deliver additional insights. However, it is unclear what type of public data they have available.
As one of the few, this big data startup offers also big data training sessions and workshops to help organisations better understand data collection, analysis and visualizations methodologies. Furthermore, they want to bridge the knowledge gap between data science experts, enthusiasts, and interested parties. They are developing a platform to stimulate knowledge sharing, but at the moment of review this was not yet live.
Their big data consultancy has developed a Data March Methodology that help organisations become data-driven. However, this methodology is nothing more than creating awareness at organisations, develop a strategy and implement the necessary big data technologies.
At the moment it is unclear what Datoscala really adds to the big data landscape, apart from that they are one of the few big data startups in the Middle East. They are a big data consultancy firm, but it is not clear what technology they have developed and how they can help organisation move forward with a big data quest. Therefore, we give them a rating of 2 bits, but this might change in the future if they have developed a clear product.
