In the platforms newsfeed you can see source code commits from Github, system alerts from Nagios and user alerts from Pingdom and many others. Normally these services would send e-mails regarding updates, but that can become overwhelming. Datadog provides a platform for monitoring the IT infrastructure as well as monitoring operations and development teams who write and run applications. The platform allows users to turn application data into actionable insights.
Datadog calls itself a monitoring-as-a-service provider that allows users to see minute-by-minute what is happening on their network. The platform also allows easy collaboration among the team members, as events can be turned into conversations easily. The dashboard provides various graphs about whats happening and all graphs are in sync, meaning users can better spot what it is when something is happening.
Users can start for free to learn how the platform works and to find out whether it is what they are looking for. Currently they have already over 40 tools and services integrated that user can connect to the platform; ranging from Amazon Web Services to Python or Ubuntu. When connected they aggregate, prioritize and graph all that data into one place and they deliver the right insights to the relevant team members.
Datadog was founded in 2010 by Olivier Pomel and Alexis L-Quc and since then they have raised $ 6.2 million in funding. Investors are Neu Venture Capital, RRE Ventures, Contour Venture Partners, IA Ventures, Index Ventures and NYC Seed. They do not have any patents (pending) and they have not yet won any awards.
They did however built a great platform that will save DevOps a lot of hassle of dealing with 40+ different platforms that they use to monitor their IT Infrastructure. In the growing landscape of tools that can be used to monitor everything, this is a welcome tool. We therefore give them a 6 bits rating.
