Amazon Moves Further Towards Robot Automation

Robots are soon to become a large part of the world’s workforce. While things don’t currently look like a science-fiction television show, that time may come. Right now, the manufacturing and industrial sectors have integrated robotics into their daily operations. In Amazon‘s warehouse, robots remain a common sight. Unfortunately, the current crop of robotic systems employed by Amazon isn’t living up to expectations.

The robots don’t seem to be as effective as desired. The company has “robo pickers” integrated into operations and they don’t seem to pick things up — or drop them off — too well. A lot of disappointment seems to have ensued.

This does not mean, however, Amazon plans on ceasing use of robots in its warehouse. Rather, plans are to work at improving the way the automated system works. Once warehouse robotics are perfected, the obtained benefits can be enormous.

The Unique Warehouse

A successfully automated warehouse could mean wonders for Amazon’s productivity. Through automating the product line, packages could be shipped in a far more expedient manner. Costs might be brought down significantly, which passes savings off to the consumer.

Amazon wants to turn its current warehouse into the warehouse of the future. Improving how its robots perform absolutely would assist with this goal. In order to see such improvements, experts are being brought in for research and consultations.

Improvements in the robo pickers seemed to be moving steadily ahead after a recent testing phase. A company called the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision crafted a device with robot arms that showed much promise. Amazon has to be thrilled with the device’s performance. Once Amazon finds its perfect robo pickers, the company’s warehouses are going to move at an unbridled pace when fulfilling orders.

Overall, the automated system and robotic mechanisms utilized in other areas of the warehouse seem to be working as well as expected. Amazon’s warehouse maintains a high volume of mechanized robotic systems. Automation seems to be working extremely well for Amazon. Hence, the company wants to maximize its full automatic potential.

The Learning Curve

Questions arise whether automated systems or robots can learn on the job. Perhaps a level of basic artificial intelligence is necessary in order to achieve the ability to learn.

The human designers, of course, can learn. Designers and engineers could take what they learned to enhance new developments with various robot systems. Robots may be able to replace certain workers, but there will always be a necessary reliance on humans who ensure the robots work as effectively as possible.

Will the robots learn? A better question would be “Will the robots become more capable of smoothly performing tasks in a warehouse?” Likely, the answer is an obvious yes. Technological advancements continually emerge. They have a tendency to move a lot faster when a billion dollar company is investing significant dollars in research, development, and acquisition.

Recouping the Investment

Amazon, like other entities utilizing automated systems, wants to maximize its profits. Improving the way warehouses operate contributes greatly to such a goal. Amazon is in the business of shipping out merchandise. Customers don’t want to wait a long time for their orders and they do not want to receive the wrong orders.

Automation reduces the potential for mix-ups and delays. This, in turn, makes people more likely to order from Amazon. Good reviews about deliveries definitely encourage people to buy. Once people are customers of Amazon merchandise, they may move onto streaming services and other things Amazon presents.

Amazon is making a strong investment in robotic systems and automations. The eventual payoff for Amazon could be huge. Look for Amazon to continue moving ahead diligently.
