Artificial Intelligence Leads to Massive Disruption in Aviation Sector

Artificial intelligence has become a powerful game changer in every technology sector. The demand for AI in the aviation industry is projected to grow even faster than most other industries.

Research and Markets found that the market for AI in the aviation sector is expected to reach $2.2 billion by 2025, which is nearly a 47% annual increase from the market size in 2018.The market is expected to grow even faster as more airlines and aerospace engineers discover new applications with machine learning and data analytics.

AI is Creating New Changes in the Global Aviation Sector

Like all industries, the aviation industry is going to continually evolve and progress as time goes by. It’s easy to see that when it comes to progress, people can’t be stopped, as a need to innovate and create exciting new opportunities often dictates how people think and act. It’s therefore important to look at all of the options that exist. AI is among the biggest changes shaping the industry, as Richard van Hooijdonk and other experts have pointed out.

But what is the future of AI with regards to aviation technologies? How will the industry use this robust technology to grow and move past what it is now? Well, let’s take a look at that, as well as speculate on some of the more interesting concepts. It’s always fun to see where human genius will take us, after all!

The Importance of Artificial Intelligence

One thing that you have to be aware of when looking at the future is the present, because it will heavily shape and influence the future. Machine learning algorithms rely on current data to forecast future trends and create highly effective algorithms. What happens is usually a logical progression from one to the next – it is very rare that the fundamental principles of any industry are abandoned completely.

As it stands right now, a growing part of the aviation industry right now is the use of artificial intelligence as part of the everyday experience. There’s a real emphasis on using AI in every part of the industry, and the focus is also on making sure that they continue to develop in such a way that planes and aviation becomes more efficient.

Hilary Solan, a writer for Boeing, wrote about the changes that AI has created for her company. Solan said that Boeing factories will integrate new AI features into their manufacturing processes to cut costs and remove product defects.

However, the main focus right now is on improving artificial intelligence to make sure that the flight experience is a more smooth one. By using AI to communicate more effectively and make small, precise changes to instruments during flight, the aviation experience becomes a much more sophisticated one.

Unfortunately, there may be some reluctance to make planes too dependent on AI just yet. Last year, a Boeing plane crashed after an AI control faced some challenges, which means that aviation companies need to be diligent with their technology.

The end goal is to attempt to create a completely automated flying experience. This type of endeavor is for the overall intention of allowing a plane to essentially fly itself. It’s not completely unheard of. Most passenger planes nowadays can be pretty much put into a form of cruise control – it’s rare that the pilot has to step up and pilot the plane for themselves.

Could AI Create Better Rocket Engines?

Rocket engines are something which you maybe associate just with NASA and the like, but in that regard, you would not be correct. It’s actually the case that companies are trying to create a form of rocket engine which is combinable with the aircraft themselves to give aviation a whole new level of power.

The big thing to know is that there is a project currently in development which is a combination of both a rocket and a standard jet engine all at once. The big problem which is being faced by people all over the world, and especially with regards to this project, is that the engine has to be able to fly at supersonic speeds if it is going to work. If it cannot fly at these speeds, then it will not work, and thus you cannot use it.

The central premise for the project at the moment is that it will combine two types of technology together. You’ve got the standard jet engine, and then you combine that with the rocket engine so that once the aircraft gets to a certain altitude and speed, the jet engine shuts down and the rocket one takes over.

Perhaps artificial intelligence can be used to assist with this issue, by providing the necessary signals and data to make the process smoother.

AI Can Learn to Sustainable Aviation

Naturally, most companies are concerned with going green and enjoying themselves without having to worry about potential environmental impacts. For something like the aviation industry, one which uses countless gallons of fuel, sustainable flight is not a nice idea so much as an eventual reality.

Obviously, making this happen isn’t as easy as it sounds. The industry isn’t quite capable of sustainable flight yet and may not be for a while. If there was a green fuel source or a clean way to develop parts and travel, and it was practical to do so, it would be in use wherever possible.

The issue with something like that is that it’s just not sustainable for a long-term usage, or even on such a scale like that. It makes it difficult to explore all of the different options, and to check out what’s on offer to come up with a broad selection of different choices.

Artificial intelligence could be the solution for this type of problem, providing more efficient fuel reports and maybe shifting to a sustainable fuel mid-journey where possible.

AI Drives Major Changes in Aviation

So, it is probably clear to see that the entirety of the aviation industry is looking to AI to improve their models in many ways. There’s a genuine sense of intrigue and interest in AI among those that are interested in looking at the direction of the aviation sector.

We all like to look towards the future from time to time. It is human instinct to do so because it gives us the confidence that we need for success. We’ve got a goal to aim for and that’s so important. It’s good that the aviation industry is working hard and won’t settle for less. They shouldn’t have to do so, and these goals and developments are going to be good for them to explore. There are multiple choices and options, and it means that there’s a bright future ahead for the industry.

AI could help us reach these goals!
