For the past five years, Big Cloud has collected crowd-sourced salary data from professionals with backgrounds in data science, machine learning and AI. Here are our key insights into the Europe and UK data science Salary Report 2021 ¦

The majority of respondents came from Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. We listened to our respondents last year, who requested a greater variety of job titles in the survey. As such we introduced the following role titles:
- Research Engineers.
- Research Scientists.
- Freelance/Contract.
- Head of/Director.
Males aged 25-34 (55%) and 35-44 (30%) made up our majority respondents. On the other hand, females made up 15% of the data pool. 66% of women are in the 25-34 age bracket. 50% of people who stated other or preferred not to say were also aged 25-34.
Employee retainment remains a challenge
From 2019 to 2021, those who were at their current company for 1 year or less dropped from 58% to 47%. Those residing at current companies for 2 years have increased from 19% (2018) to 29% (2021). However, past the two-year mark, the percentage of retained employees practically halves across 3rd and 4th years of employment. This highlights that businesses are perhaps still not doing enough to retain their existing workforce effectively.
Python popularity at an all time high
For the past three years, we have seen an annual 10% increase in respondents claiming to use Python as their primary modelling coding language. From 60% in 2019, to 80% in 2021.
73% of respondents use Python as their primary production coding language.
Disparities in job and salary satisfaction
Overall, only 54% of our respondents said they believe their current salary and package is satisfactory. We broke down salary satisfaction across job roles to find a disproportionate number of Research Engineers are not satisfied with their current salary (a whopping 75%)!
Head of/Director/Chief Data Scientist roles are the most satisfied at 70%, arguably because they are often paid more than the averages of their counterparts.
