3 Advances in the Internet of Things That Will Change Our Daily Lives

At the start of the new year, many tech-savvy individuals are looking to the Internet of Things to learn what’s coming in the way of new advances. Technology is ever evolving, providing products and services that would have been unimaginable even just five years ago. Here’s a look at a few innovations that will change day to day living in 2018.

The Ways We Connect Will Become More Accessible

While satellite m2m technology has been able to provide network communications to remote areas, that’s not the only impressive advance to change the way the world communicates. Even in populated areas, connecting to a wifi provider requires a number of optimum conditions. The percentage of your battery, bandwidth allocation, and range are just a few of the factors that affect your ability to connect in a given area, but that’s all about to change.

As we head into the new year, expect to see greater availability of low-power, short-range networks. In fact, these types of connections are expected to far exceed the number of longer-range connections through the next 8 to 10 years. While this beneficial to businesses, this also means individual users will have a greater pool of choices for their networking needs. Networks will vary, depending on technology, applications, and providers.

Welcome to the City of the Future

We already have smartphones and smart homes. Now, we’re beginning to see the development of smart cities through the use of remote sensors. As we head into the new year, more cities will take advantage of motion sensors to provide more personalised service to the public, while also cutting down on power consumption.

One way in which this will occur is in adapting sensors to street lighting. Already having debuted in some cities, motion detectors will allow empty city streets to remain dark until motion is detected. As movement is sensed, street lights will illuminate in advance of the coming vehicle. Once the vehicle has left the area, the street lights will again go dark. In adopting this technology en masse, billions of dollars could be saved.

Sensors are also being used in parking lots, particularly at multi-level parking garages, where finding an open space can be frustrating. Monitors are being installed at the entrances, which inform drivers how many spaces are available and where the empty spaces are located. Sensors located at each space tell the system which spaces are taken and which ones are vacant.

Greater Use of Cloud Technology Will Advance Virtual Computing

While we have had cloud technology for a few years now, it’s still far from achieving its potential and that may have something to do with the relatively small group of people utilising this type of storage. As cloud storage becomes more commercialised and is more widely accepted, expect to see greater variety in the service of this type of storage. Already the technology has been adapted for both business and private use, so seeing a wider range of services is a natural evolution of this technology.

While saving files and documents will continue to be the primary attraction to cloud technology, providers will look to expand their services. Premium services will allow users to turn their accounts into virtual desktops, storing applications and network settings, as well. As this evolves, we may soon see a day where clouds will store everything, allowing users to access everything from any terminal anyplace in the world.

There are many more innovations forthcoming in the coming year that will affect how we live and how we connect to the Internet of Things. As we incorporate more advances into our daily lives on a personal level and as a global community, we may be able to impact our dependence on the planet significantly. In making our lives more convenient, these advances are also helping us to lessen the damage we’re having on our environment and reduce the costs of living and operating businesses.
