Working With Retail Numbers: How Retailers Can Benefit From Big Data

Retailers have access to a lot of data, but it does not mean much unless they know what strategy to utilize when working with the numbers. They also have to know how to take that data and make it work for them, so that they can get an edge on the competition. Finally, they must be able to accurately use a model that will give them the information that they need.

In order for retailers to make the most of the data at hand, there are three conditions that must be met.

1. Select the Correct Data

Retailers need to find, look at and work with several different kinds of data. They need to be able to pull data in unique ways, by taking information that they already have at their fingertips. For example, product reviews, customer loyalty data and more all apply in this situation. Other types of data needs to be pulled in as well. This might include social media information, like comments from customers. In order to figure out which data helps the most, retailers need to identify certain issues that must be worked on and then find the data that they need as a result.

2. Create Models to Assist the Process

IT support is essential to the process of gathering data, and as a result, retailers need to focus on this area. Initially, the goal is to figure out which data is the most essential in order to pull it for analytics. After that, it is important to make sure that there is no duplicate information and to look and see if any data is missing.

Furthermore, it is important to realize that you can’t do anything with data just by itself. You also need an analytics model that will help you make predictions with the data and also improve your performance. Retailers need to begin with figuring out a good opportunity to pursue. Needless to say these arent lacking in the real world either there are plenty.

The data that can be garnered from EPoS machines, technologies such as iBeacon and even WiFi can herald a lot of information. From there, they need to figure out what the model can do to help them and then create a model to work with.

3. Find a New Way of Doing Things

In order to utilize big data, you have to find a new way of doing things. For instance, when you create your analytics model, it needs to have something to do with your business and it needs to help you with your daily tasks. Therefore, the person designing the model must have some idea of what information the manager uses to guide their actions. Employees must have tools and interfaces to assist them in utilizing the model, so they can do their jobs. A few other essential components are modelling by leaders, training, metrics and incentives.

With the advent of these big data programs also comes a few trends. For example, retailers are able to work with marketplace changes, becoming more efficient and helping their staff and customers. As a result of the process of going through the data, strategies are created. Retailers are working to make the shopping experience better for their customers. Finally, shoppers are seen as individuals and enjoy their experience more.

All of these instances show different ways that businesses can gain big data from every day processes with a few tweaks and changes.
