What Impact Can IoT Have on Sustainability?

Sustainability is something more people and companies are striving for these days. They know the long-term health of our planet involves living and operating responsibly now and thinking about how today’s actions impact future generations. Fortunately, technology can help people meet their sustainability goals. Specifically, the Internet of Things (IoT) has fantastic potential.

It Can Make Garbage and Recycling Collections More Streamlined

In many towns and cities, the people tasked with periodically emptying garbage and recycling bins do it on a set schedule. Usually, managers determine the average usage of a particular receptacle, and how long it takes for people to fill it. But, the IoT can make their management decisions more precise.

For example, some IoT-equipped bins have sensors indicate when a container is almost full. Then, companies can send their employees only to the bins that need emptying. The alternative requires having them go to the places where people dispose of their garbage and recycled items to empty the containers whether or not they need it. That approach wastes time and could cause workers to do unnecessary driving, which adds to air pollution.

It Can Help Farmers Sustainably Manage Their Cattle

Wildlife experts know that fencing disrupts animal migrations. Some ways to minimize the issue center on temporarily creating openings in some fenced areas ” such as those used for border control between countries ” or using fence materials that are less likely to hurt or kill animals as they migrate.

Those methods may work, but there’s a move for cattle farmers to potentially use so-called virtual fencing by implementing technology. In that case, all the farmers in a given area share the land used for cattle grazing, and all the cows have IoT sensors.

That technology allows farmers to see the location of their cattle, determine whether they’re grazing too heavily on a certain piece of land and more. If necessary, alert sounds on the sensor worn by each cow could emit a sound that encourages the creature to move to an area that has more abundant grazing opportunities.

It Can Support Manufacturers’ Sustainability Initiatives

Many companies decide to take sustainability seriously by establishing relevant goals for their operating methods. They might choose to adopt a technique that uses less water or work with the companies that handle their shipping needs so that the transport of finished products is more sustainable. Regardless of how companies plan to go about enhancing their sustainability efforts, the IoT can help.

When enterprises commit to functioning more sustainably, the public’s perception of them could become more favorable. The brands could become more profitable, too. Statistics indicate that, around the world, 66% of people are willing to pay more from products made by a sustainable company.

But, any brand can say they’re sustainable. The data provided by IoT gadgets could help companies add weight to their claims. For example, one could talk about a new IoT gadget that provides metrics to help them avoid wasting money. Then, they could get more specific and say something like, “The metrics provided by our IoT interface showed that we reduced energy expenditure by a third during the first year of use.”

It Can Enhance Environmental Monitoring

Environmental researchers frequently evaluate things ranging from air pollution to soil health. IoT technology can make it easier to do those things remotely and continually. Then, scientists can save money and collect more data. Plus, since software interfaces can verify that each sensor is working as it should, researchers don’t have to use resources to travel to each sensor location to check.

One recent example involved using IoT sensors, along with other technologies, to track the fires in the Amazon rainforest. In that instance, sensors could distinguish between flaming and smoldering areas. They also determine the amount of space affected by particular recent fires.

It Can Reduce Food Waste

Wasted food contributes to emissions, causes associated waste for the agricultural resources used to grow it when applicable. Some analysts also connect food waste to food insecurity. For example, think about if spoilage happens before the food reaches grocery store shelves. Then, it could be even harder for people to obtain nutritious things to eat.

One of the primary ways that IoT technology can help cut down on food waste is by identifying its source. Most factors that lead to food waste happen early in the food supply chain, sometimes only 24 hours after harvest. But, if the respective parties know where food waste occurs and why, they can start working towards positive change.

IoT Technology Will Move Sustainability Forward

These examples highlight how useful the IoT could be for helping us live in a more sustainable world. In addition to giving data about current conditions, some IoT interfaces reveal areas for improvement.
