Clearly, fixing and finding query performance rapidly is important in this age of cloud computing. Cloud computing is entirely internet based where applications, storages and servers are delivered to a companys devices and computers via the webas oppose to using personal devices or local servers to handle an application.
How Does the Carbon Footprint of Cloud Computing Look Like?
ICT systems, especially the electron computer server farms that form the foundation of cloud computing use about 1,500 terawatt hours of electricity annually. Essentially, this is around 10 percent of the total global electricity generation. Currently, 50 percent more power is required to convey bytes, more than the power used to move airplanes in world aviation. As such, the battery of a typical smartphone is always short term.
Cloud Different Than Other Sectors
The cloud makes the most of energy, more than various areas of a typical economy. Transportation cooling, heating and lighting makes use of power with rough limits. As appliances and cars become more efficient, the carbon footprint and power consumption is reduced without any value lost. However, with cloud computing, its value is derived from the fact that it has to be constantly on all of the time. From massive centers of data and smartphones to computer trading platformsthere are zero off periods and break times.
Small Data Centers Limited Technologically
After a lot of pressure from its customers to release information on the companys carbon footprint, energy consumption and how its doing on renewable energy goals, Amazon believes there are certain areas in cloud computing services that are largely ignored. According to Amazon, thousands of small data centers around the world are the real culprit to wasted power and destruction to environments.
This is because these small companies lack the top technology most giant cloud companies across the world have. However, while Amazon does have highly utilized servers than most typical servers, the company trails its competitors when it comes to source of power and power used for other functions beyond computing, like cooling.
Low Carbon Sources
In efforts to clean the cloud through the procurement of low-carbon energy sources, cloud computing users and service providers are seemingly cognizant of their huge carbon footprint and doing something about it. This is why the data centers of Apple are currently 100 percent powered using renewable energy, with the company working towards raising its use of renewable energy in other areas. On the other hand, Google gets 34 percent of its power from renewable energy sources.
At the same time, Amazon has promised to expand its renewable options such as introducing wind energy to grid its data centers. However, the fact that most companies and individuals are turning to cloud computing is a sign of better environmental management, since cloud computing is a lot more eco-friendly than the traditional computing method. Furthermore, cloud computing can see large groups of networks of servers at a lower cost with very specialized connections, spreading data processing activities across them.
Clearly, the move to geothermal, hydroelectricity, solar energy or wind energy sources by data centers and cloud service providers is a great idea, but either way, a lot of electricity is required as many people turn towards cloud computing in droves.
