Treparel is a big data text analytics and visualization software provider. They have developed the KMX platform (Knowing, Mapping and Exploration) that analyses and visualizes unstructured data to help organisations improve their innovation processes, gain competitive advantage, decrease risks and costs and manage customer interactions. Treparel stands for TREnds PAtterns and RELations.
Treparel was founded in 2006 after the founder, dr. Anton Heijs, was asked to develop a data-mining tool for Philips to analyse patents. In 2011 they created a partnership with Fairview Research to jointly create a product that focuses on integrating Treparels KMX Patent Analytics software with Fairviews Alexandria Patent Data Warehouse.
Today, their patent-pending KMX platform can process large data sets and provide users with multiple visualization possibilities. It is especially targeted towards primarily the life sciences or intellectual property markets. With the KMX Patent Analytics suite, users can classify, cluster and visualize patents to understand which organisation has what sort of patents. Based on that information organisations can decide to do more research in a certain area or to start buying patents.
Of course, there are more data-mining startups that offer insights in analysing massive amounts of unstructured data. What makes Treparel stand out is that they focus especially on legal, Intellectual property or financial documents. With Treparel users can find the specialised and technical information they need in a short timeframe to understand how to use knowledge gained and turn it into insights. Treparel is used by global companies, government agencies, software vendors and/or data publishers.
Finding relevant patents, monitoring and mapping of intellectual property, finding the right legal or financial documents and presenting that information to the right people at the right time is becoming more and more important with the explosive growth of these documents. Although they have found a niche in Intellectual Property and legal documents, they are also aiming at other industries such as the healthcare industry or the online media industry. Problem is, that in those industries the competition is growing rapidly and can be fierce.
In 2007 they became Technopartner in The Netherlands and they are part of a research centre and university ecosystem. Treparel is in rather specialized niche and when it wants to move to other industries they will probably face more competition. Therefore, we give them a 6 bits rating.
