DataGravity is a new emerging company founded by EqualLogic founder Paula Long together with John Joseph. In 2012 they received a total of $ 42 million of funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, Charles River Ventures and General Catalyst Partners. Its mission is to turn data into information and they want to give their future customers a simple way to wring value from data. They are developing data crunching technology for smaller companies.

The $ 42 million they received is used to grow their employment base from the current 30 employees to 40-50 employees in 2013. In 2013 they will remain in stealth and with all employees work on the product which is described as a combination of hardware and software for the SME market, who do not have large IT departments. It is clear that DataGravity wants to make data analytics available for the masses, but it remains vague what they are doing exactly.

The reason being is that they believe that what DataGravity is developing is not yet done by anyone else and they do not want a different company to copy it. One of the partners of Andreesen Horowitz explained that DataGravity is developing a product that turns dump storage that only does something when it is queried into intelligent storage.

It is obvious that they are onto something; otherwise they would not have been able to get $ 42 million in funding within half a year. However, it is unclear whether they have any patents and while still being in stealth modus they obvious have not won any awards yet. Therefore, we are not able to give them a rating yet, but we will monitor them when they plan to release their tool in 2014.
