Algoritmica, a Dutch big data startup, started combining predictive analytics algorithms in order to build predictive models in November 2011. Koen Havlik, a former CERN analyst, Tim Salimans, currently in the running to win the 3 million dollars Heritage Health Prize and Mark-Jan Harte, a data-modelling entrepreneur, started Algoritmica. Together they are able to help leading organisations from around the world with their big data problems.

Algoritmica has developed predictive analytics solutions for several clients already, including Microsoft and the Dutch government. For these organisations they have developed tailored algorithms that improve business processes and/or improve customer satisfaction. For a case done for Vattenfall, the large energy company, they have built an algorithm that uses the sensor data within the wind turbines to predict when maintenance is needed. This will save the company a lot of money on unnecessary helicopter flights to the turbines and unnecessary maintenance as well as expensive consulting.

Another case that they have developed was for a large e-commerce organisation. Using cyclic patterns, season influences, prices, variety in lead-times, the inventory itself and many other variables, Algoritmica is able to predict inventory optimization. The goal of Algoritmica is, by doing these tailored projects, to eventually find a solution for a problem that is more universal and as such build a scalable algorithm that can help many organisations at once.

At the moment they have 4 employees, still relatively small, but this could easily grow in the foreseeable future as big data is gaining more and more traction at large corporates. Since they started, they have not received any funding and they are also not looking for funding as the projects Algoritmica is doing ensure sufficient income to keep them going.

Algoritmica is a great example of how the future of data scientists could look like. A few data scientists get together and start a company to help organisations with their big data problems. No need for funding, just helping organisations and thereby having an impact and making money. In the mean time they join, and win, competitions on Kaggle, giving them more publicity. We therefore give them a 7 bits rating.
