A Traditional Manager’s Guide for Modern Leadership Styles

There is no doubt that business organizations and educational institutions are now embracing the millennial evolution. Traditional leaders or those who were schooled from the top-down, military-like management style are beginning to understand that the needs, characteristics, and behaviors of the current and future workforce have changed significantly and therefore, they must adopt new leadership styles that would make them genuinely effective.

That said, here are five modern leadership styles that every traditional manager must know.

1. Innovative leadership

This is the frontrunner in modern leadership styles that immensely surpassed the traditional, top-down, linear approach by thinking outside of the box and finding more than a thousand ways to achieve the organisation‘s goals.

Innovative leadership can be seen as the exact opposite of the conventional management style that was stuck in the idea that a once-proven-and-tested solution can lead to a one-size-fits-all formula when in reality, it was only a one-size-fits-one idea.

Innovative leaders actively search for more approaches. To them, the goal is more important than the role. They do not easily dump things “even those that may appear like rubbish “but they are more than willing to roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty along with their team, and take great risks.

To employ this leadership style, you have to start developing your leadership skills and challenge your limits while your eyes are fixed on the big picture. Motivate the people above, below, and around you to work with you while sharing the same mindset of achieving the next big thing.

2. Servant leadership

As the term denotes, servant leaders safeguard the holistic success of the team. Servant leaders invest both in the personal and professional lives of their team members. They invest a great deal of time, money, energy, and resources to get to know them better, discuss their goals, and analyze how they can help people achieve their goals.

Servant leadership is a straightforward premise that a good manager or leader is a servant first and a leader second. Servant leaders isolate themselves from traditional managers who dominate subordinates and tell them what to do, but rather, they serve them by providing all their needs, inspiring them to perform as well as extending their help. These approaches will lead toward the fulfilment of a much greater goal “ the organisation’s mission and vision.

3. Visionary leadership

A visionary leader not only dreams about the future and translates those dreams into SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) but they also constantly communicate their vision with great passion and conviction that results in getting the commitment of the entire team.

To become a visionary leader, you must also be charismatic to get the team’s commitment:

â— Be sensitive to the environment and to the members’ needs

â— Be articulate about your clear-cut vision

â— Effectively use non-verbal communication

â— Display a high level of self-confidence

â— Boost the morale of the team members

4. Coaching management style

What sets this leadership style from the other management styles is that it transforms leaders and managers into coaches that inspire, encourage, and guide their teams to greater outputs and efficiencies. Similar to a coach of any sports, these leaders seek to build a rock-solid employee-employer relationship with their team.

Coach-leaders also prioritize clear communication between them and their members. They also seek first to understand their team members, most especially their challenges and weaknesses by showing good listening skills and being empathetic, courteous, encouraging, and sincere before seeking to be understood, which is one of the seven habits of highly effective people.

To employ this leadership style, give yourself a 360-degree listening review. Ask for feedback concerning your listening skills from your mentor, your colleagues, and even your subordinates. If you don’t get brilliant responses from all of them, then, learn to quiet down and listen up.

That

5. Diversity leadership

These leaders are those who are persistently looking out for diversity that will create big leaps forward for organizations. Diversity-leaders are so committed to the diversity that they build a team with people from all walks of life “ new hires and industry veterans “ as they aspire to strike a good balance between fresh ideas and proven and time-tested concepts.

To become this type of leader, you must be willing to embrace diversity, welcoming everyone “ regardless of sex, religious beliefs, ethnicity or sexuality, which, as a result, enhances both the culture and growth of the organization.
