Foundations of IT Systems Administration

Build practical foundations for working in IT systems administration and cloud operations. You’ll learn how to make sense of an unfamiliar IT environment, define what belongs in an asset inventory, identify accountable owners, and document the evidence behind each entry. You’ll practice using command-line tools in Bash and PowerShell, navigating files and directories, interpreting output, and finding help before running an unfamiliar command. You’ll also learn to provision a cloud virtual machine: check service access, organize resources, create an individual SSH key pair, connect to the host, and record why each resource exists and who is responsible for it.

Scenarios from help desk, operations, security, finance, and warehouse teams show how different roles contribute to investigating problems and maintaining reliable records. Through demonstrations, guided practice, and hands-on activities, you’ll develop habits that make your technical work easier to verify and hand off. This course is designed for beginners and aspiring IT support or systems administration professionals. No prior command-line experience is required; access to a cloud account may be needed for provisioning practice.
