AI Phishing Detection: Build a Machine Learning System

This hands-on course walks you step by step through building an end-to-end AI-powered phishing detection system starting from raw email data. You’ll analyze modern phishing attack patterns, understand the limitations of rule-based filters, and see how machine learning can better track adaptive and evolving campaigns. From there, you’ll learn to preprocess email content and engineer rich NLP features including TF-IDF, n-grams, urgency markers, link density, subject line patterns, and capitalization ratios tailored for security detection. You’ll then train and compare text classification models using stratified splits, hyperparameter tuning, and security-focused metrics such as precision, recall, F1-score, ROC and Precision-Recall curves, and confusion matrix analysis. Beyond text, you’ll extract URL-based features (lexical, domain reputation, HTTPS, redirects, shortened links, and IP-based clues) and build URL and sender classifiers informed by SPF, DKIM, DMARC, reply-to mismatches, and display name spoofing.

You’ll integrate these text, URL, and sender signals into an ensemble phishing detector that outputs a final verdict and confidence score, and extend it with visual similarity checks using screenshots, perceptual hashing, and logo detection to flag fake login pages. Finally, you’ll tackle real-world operational challenges: class imbalance, threshold tuning for different risk appetites, concept drift, adversarial evasion tactics, and human-in-the-loop escalation. You’ll deploy your system as a FastAPI scoring service, containerize it with Docker, plug it into security workflows, and set up monitoring for continuous improvement. By the end, you’ll have a practical, production-ready blueprint for AI-driven phishing detection that you can adapt to your own environment.
