With big data come big security issues. The more data that is available, the more data that needs protection. At the moment only half of the information in the digital universe that needs protection is actually protected. Luckily, there are also big data startups that focus on big data security and one of them is Packetloop, developed in Australia.

Packetloop is a big data security analytics platform that can process years of network data and visualizes it in graphs to show how save a network is. This gives companies the possibility to find and track hackers in real-time and see where they came from. It ensures that organisations have a safe and secure network and helps users finding outliers and the needle in the haystack in massive amounts of data. In order to use it, users have to upload their data to Packetloop and the analysis is done online.

Packetloop analyses every packet conversation, file or protocol for threats, misuse or anomalies. It offers in-depth traffic analysis and is open for public Beta since recently. At the moment they have already over 200 registrations that want to try the software. Packetloop promises to be an alternative for Security Incident and Event Management systems. The beta version features a threat module and works with Google Chrome only. However, they say that they will expand this in the future.

Packetloop claims that it is easier to install and is more scalable than log management tools. The fact that it can scan, analyse, process and visualize massive amounts of data on security issues make Packetloop a unique big data startup. Especially visualizing is key in understanding security analysis and exactly that is one of the strong aspects of Packetloop.

However, one of the problems of Packetloop is that at the moment they only offer an in the cloud solution. According to Scott Crane, CEO of Packetloop, the reason for delivering it first on the cloud is because they want to make it available for everyone, instead of just big companies. Although understandable, it does make it less attractive for a lot of companies around the world that are not willing to upload their private data to the cloud or that face juridical problems because of export regulations (in many countries exporting data to a cloud server in a different country requires an export permit).

Apart from that, Packetloop offers a great and important service. They have a few patents pending in the USA and they did won a AWS Technical Innovator Award recently. Security will become more and more important the coming years, so there is a lot of work to do for Packetloop. Big data startups gives them a 6 bit rating.

Update September 6: Packetloop is acquired by Arbor Networks
