What are the prominent issues and risks of global concern? How do we cooperate to solve them? This week, these questions are being discussed in Davos by key political and business leaders.
In light of this, Metafused looks at a sample of Guardian articles covering the World Economic Forum (WEF) in years 2011-2015. By using our latest topic classification techniques, we are able to quantify how much of the most-common issues and keywords mentioned are associated with a given topic (see below). Our technology allows us to run this analysis in minutes rather than the hours it would take using traditional research methods.
Expectedly, since we take the Guardian as our news source, the UK and its role in Davos are more widely represented.
More than that, we are able to capture interesting shifts within each topic. For instance, in economics, the most-frequently discussed issues were:
These in turn are coherent with economic events of the years.
We can see the specifics, but also overall trends. For example, this year one of the key themes is automation, supporting above evidence that technology is on the rise. While 2011-2015 technology discussions were mostly concerned with data security, this year the leaders are talking about wider spillover effects of technology. Finally, in 2014, news was largely optimistic, with economic recovery seemingly on the way, which could explain other issues, such as climate, being pushed more to the front.
