About us

Here at the HMICFRS, we assess the effectiveness and efficiency of police forces and fire and rescue services. Independent of government and the services we inspect, we ask the questions the public wish to have answered, and produce major reports which shine a light on a wide range of issues. Join us, and you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference to the quality of local services and the lives of the general public. We’re a unique organisation with staff seconded or loaned from across the civil service, police forces and fire and rescue services. We’re also a rewarding place to work, and take great pride in the quality of work we achieve and the opportunities we create for our staff. You can find out more about HMICFRS on our website (https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmicfrs/) and see some of our recent reports.

About the role

As a Senior Data Analyst, you’ll focus on business intelligence, data assurance, quality and other business areas, and understand, manipulate and accurately analyse data. Applying a range of tools and techniques for analysis and visualisation, you’ll use your knowledge and expertise to provide valuable insights, and brief internal and external audiences in ways that make complex data easy to understand and evaluate.

Your work may involve projects with high political exposure, value or complexity, and in addition to engaging with senior stakeholders as you champion the importance of data science, you’ll engage with the wider community and mentor junior members of the team. By playing an integral part in a police collaboration project, our overall aim is to deliver high quality analyses, insights and visualisations that meet government priorities to reduce crime and improve police performance. With this in mind, you’ll lead on the technical development of a Power BI product that meets the needs of the collaboration, working closely with Data Engineers and the product lead to deliver the roadmap.

About you

As a DDaT badged professional, with a demonstratable passion for your work, and the ability to assist teams as they apply a range of techniques to analyse data and provide insights through visualisation, you’ll understand data sources, organisations and storage, and be an expert user of SharePoint. With wide-ranging knowledge of conceptual, logical and physical data modelling, and the development of knowledge relating to data cleansing and standardisation, you’ll have the skills to present analysis and visualisations in a way that makes complex messages clear to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Capable of influencing senior stakeholders in ways that support development of the product and analyses, and ready to lead a team to develop and deliver analytics products, you’ll be skilled in the use of Power BI, DAX, Power Query and R. With the ability to identify key trends in data and add value to analysis, you’ll be an excellent organiser, ready to take the initiative, and possess the ability to work under pressure even when things don’t go smoothly. And as a strong team player, you’ll be willing to support other team members and improve how things are done.

Your rewards

In addition to an excellent salary and Civil Service pension, we’re committed to investing in our people and providing them with great opportunities to maximise their skills and achieve their potential. We offer a wide range of work-based training and development, including access to coaching and mentoring, and five days volunteering per year.

The diversity of our people is a real asset to HMICFRS. We’re committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive workplace where everyone is able to bring their whole selves to work and perform at their best. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates and people with disabilities, as they are currently under-represented at this grade level. Appointments will be made on merit on the basis of fair and open competition. If you want to find out more about our work, please visit www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmicfrs/
