The vision of the WPP Open Platform is to create a common development and architecture framework, with supporting infrastructure, for the development of digital products across WPP. The platform will provide the single point for access to world class technology and data for our agencies; allowing them to build and scale products and applications, then share them across the business, improving visibility and collaboration. With Open, we expect to address our client needs faster and reduce the time to market for new capability.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be responsible for the detailed design and jointly running of the engineering team. This will include advising on and contributing to the implementation and delivery of software.

This position is a hands-on engineering leadership role. The role is accountable for the successful technical delivery of WPP Open, entailing hands-on architecture and guidance for the implementation of our platform. The role demands a balance of deep technical expertise, senior leadership, preferably a knowledge of the Advertising Industry.

What you'll be doing:

  • You will work very closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure our systems are fit for purpose through a nuanced understanding of the business context and the factors that drive the product life cycle.
  • You will work closely with the Engineering Lead & Product leads across the other product areas in the business to ensure cohesion (through application topology awareness) between our systems and that our collective delivery delivers against WPP business objectives.
  • You will provide guidance, rooted in experience, for engineering best practice across our product areas.
  • You will occasionally provide designs and solutions for critical projects that allow the development teams to deliver software on time and to agreed functional and non-functional specifications.
  • You will regularly provide technical leadership to make sure that the designs are implemented using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • You will influence the management of technical debt across projects; making the right calls between balancing pragmatic delivery and compromising implementation patterns.
  • You will drive innovation; coaching engineers to experiment and choose appropriate technologies to fit into our ecosystem – this requires you to be an expert authority on data architecture & engineering tools, techniques and patterns.
  • You will stay on top of GCP costs accrued in our projects and prioritise optimisations when costs exceed expectations.
  • You will be the senior contact/escalation point for engineering people issues, including defining roles, hiring and working with operational leads to effectively onboard new team members.

What you'll need:

  • Significant experience of working with senior stakeholders to manage expectations and provide technical insight
  • Advocate for the engineering teams, build a constructive and engaging culture
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring members of the engineering team
  • Significant experience of hiring engineering roles
  • Significant and demonstrable Python and Java development experience.
  • Significant and demonstrable Cloud Computing experience with knowledge of Cloud Native products
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of using Unix / Linux based Operating Systems
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of implementing Python best practice
  • An ability to understand and translate product and business requirements into technical solutions rapidly and effectively
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of test-driven development alongside use of automated test frameworks, mocking/stubbing
  • Proven experience of project working and commercial development processes – particularly Agile methodologies
  • Experience of working with code repositories (e.g. Git), bug tracking tools (e.g. Jira, Bugzilla) and Wikis (e.g. Confluence)
  • Experience of working with Operational tooling surrounding the SDLC such as IAC, CI/CD
  • Significant and demonstrable experience designing microservice architecture patterns
  • Experience of working with API implementation patterns and interfaces
  • Ideally, you have used GCP extensively
  • Knowledge of the concepts for data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning
